Due to strained relations and an uneasy ceasefire, travel to Azerbaijani border regions is not advised, nor is it permitted in most cases. Though trouble is not common with foreign visitors, the threat is present and all but imperative journeys should be avoided to the areas. Political demonstrations should be avoided if at all possible, as they have been known to turn violent. Diphtheria, hepatitis B and E, tick-borne encephalitis, brucellosis, echinococcosis, leishmaniasis and typhoid are known to occur, and precautions should be taken – sometimes including vaccination. Water used for drinking, making ice cubes or brushing teeth should first be sterilised in some manner. Fruit should be peeled before consumption and vegetables should be cooked. Meat should only be eaten well-cooked and hot. Dairy products are considered safe for consumption.
