Armenia has a large road system, but surfaces tend to be on the poor side – a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. Care should be taken when driving in rural areas to avoid animals and people, other drivers should be watched out for as they tend to ignore basic road regulations and markings. Driving at night should be avoided altogether. Bus and taxi services cover most of the towns and cities, and coach services offer longer journeys – whilst quality is not very high, prices are very reasonable indeed. Trolleybuses and a metro system are also available in Yerevan. Rail travel is cheap, but trains tend to be overcrowded and poorly maintained. Pickpockets and petty thefts are all too common, so belongings should be kept safe at all times. Domestic flights do operate sometimes, but fuel shortages make these services sporadic at best.
